Kayak Instruction
The following is a listing of all courses offered by Breaking Waves. These will generally be
run at the Laurel Creek Conservation Area in Waterloo or the Shades Mills Conservation Area
in Cambridge. While several courses have been scheduled (see our Calendar of Events)
other dates, locations and courses are always possible.
Note: Breaking Waves does not provide kayaks or other paddling gear. If you do not have your
own boat, contact us and we can help with sourcing rental equipment. Waivers, Medical Information Sheets,
and a Checklist of things to bring are all found here:
Paddle Canada Sea Kayaking Skills: Introduction to Kayaking
(Skills Session / Certification Course) |
| Content: Paddle Canada Sea Kayaking Skills: Introduction to Kayaking introduces the novice to paddling a kayak in calm,
sheltered water. Rescue techniques at this level incorporate the use of a paddling partner and it is essential for
all Flatwater certified paddlers to travel on the water with others who have been trained in the
techniques of assisted rescues. The Certification Course covers all the material listed below. The evening Skills
Sessions will cover a subset of the full course skills, but offers no certification. |
| Location: Enclosed and sheltered with easy landing options immediately present.
This course can be conducted in a pool. |

| Course Length: 8-10 Hours (3 hours for the Skills Session) |
Conditions: Wind Calm, Sea State Calm to Rippled |
Course Material
Rescue: Wet Exit, Retrieving a swamped kayak, Eskimo Rescue, T- rescue, Rafting.
Paddling Skills: Lifting and carrying a kayak, Forward and reverse paddling, Forward and
reverse sweep strokes, Draw strokes, Low Brace, Edging.
Knowledge: Boat design, Boat Outfitting, Clothing, Safety equipment, Paddles,
Injury Prevention, Equipment care, Kayaking resources. |
